When You Wish Upon a Star

“When I grow up, I want to be a …”? Do you even remember? When you were a kid, what did you wish to be when you grew up? I don’t recall the specifics, but for me I believe that “horse trainer” and “pilot” were in there somewhere along the way. I’m grown up now, by the way, and I’m neither of those things. But I’m ok with that.

I don’t think you realistically (or not so realistically) start formulating that wish until you actually start working. That’s when the disparity begins to set in. Between what you find is either available for you to do, or what you need to do … and what you wish, deep down inside, that you could do.

I see these stages in my life passing so rapidly before my eyes, in fleeting chunks, it seems. My 20’s, when I explored, figured things out, and struggled with alcoholism. My 30’s, when I restored my spirituality, met that great guy, started a wonderful family, at last. Now I’m entering my 40’s and wondering, “Is it too late? Can I still pick something I’d love to do?”

If you think that it’s too late for you and me to wish upon that star – you are wrong. And I’ll tell you why. Julia Child didn’t start cooking until her late 30’s. She is now a beloved part of history, known for being an American chef, author, and television personality … all of which BEGAN in this later stage of her life. I don’t know about you, but I find that thrilling. And it makes my head spin with the possibilities that are still out there.

So what do you wish upon that star? What would you like to begin, at this point in your life? For me, as long as I can remember now (as a working adult, and during the time that I was able to be a stay at home mom) … I have wished upon a star to be a writer. So this is me letting it begin. Welcome to my new blog.  And thanks for joining me on my maiden voyage.
