Monkey Snuggables |
Sonja, owner of Sonja’s Snuggables has been on quite a journey the past six years. She began to sew after she was in a car accident which left her with a spinal injury. She still struggles with the effects today, but one thing that gets her mind off her pain is sewing.
“I battle it everyday, but this helps take my mind off of it and makes me feel good, and it makes me feel good when I see other people enjoying my creations,” said Sonja.
“I battle it everyday, but this helps take my mind off of it and makes me feel good, and it makes me feel good when I see other people enjoying my creations,” said Sonja.
She quickly discovered her talent
for sewing and design. Her sewing
studio is a rainbow of colors, all shades and hues of solid and print fleece
fabric stacked high on shelves around her sewing machines.
She began by making Snuggable creatures for friends and family,
then expanded to craft shows – where her animals often sold out! As the
requests came in, she expanded the types of animals she could create.
The Snuggables
I loved them the minute I saw them!
They’re super soft and hand crafted from fleece fabric. They’re so cuddly - I was shocked at how large they were. The perfect size for using as a pillow while lounging and watching movies! They’re also very fun, and each and every one is unique.
The fabric “speaks to me,” says Sonja. She finds sewing and designing calming. She
enjoys working with contrasting fabric colors; no two animals end up identical.
And each is finished off with a “Sonja's Snuggables ~ Made in Colorado” custom tag.

Do You Sew?
This part of Sonja’s story is
what fascinated me the most.
Sonja contacted
long-time pattern maker Simplicity in early 2009 to see if they'd be interested
in buying one of her patterns. Simplicity was interested and asked Kent to send
samples. They loved it, and after a
rather lengthy process the business purchased and published Kent’s first
pattern.
Within the first year, nearly 9,240 patterns were sold internationally. Recently, Simplicity introduced Kent’s second pattern.
The first Simplicity pattern #2394 contains
instructions for making an elephant, big and small rhinos, a giraffe, hippo
and monkey.
With the second Simplicity pattern #1930, you can create your own horses, unicorns, dogs,
a Pegasus, and a panda or bear.
